Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD Soundtrack

Does anybody remember the first Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater back in 1999? Well, we sure do! Back then “extreme sports” were at an all-time high and Tony Hawk’s popularity was at it’s peak. So what does he do to bring skateboarding into the forefront? He teamed up with Activision and released “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.”

It brought skateboarding into everyone’s living room and inspired many to pick up a board and the streets were never the same since. Other than watching your skater fall face-down across the pavement from a failed nose-grind, what a lot of people remember the most about the ‘Pro Skater’ series was the music. The first one introduced people to the skateboarding culture and brought Goldfinger, The Dead Kennedy’s, Suicidal Tendencies, The Suicide Machines & The Vandals (among others) to many who might have never heard of them. It also introduced the idea that licensed music in video games could actually help sell records! (Something that everyone adopted years later and is now the norm.)

So with the announcement of the reissue of the classic Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game coming to ourconsoles again. One could only ask: will the soundtrack be the same? The answer: yes and no. Due to some licensing issues, the reissue would not have all of the songs featured in the first two Pro Skater titles due to licensing issues. so a new 16-song soundtrack was assembled! Ken Overbey, the project manager on the new games explained the challenges in a recent interview:

We definitely wanted to bring back some of the songs from the original soundtrack, but wanted new songs as well. The most difficulty we had was our budget, which was very small, and the scope and time frame; it was a lot of work to get it all lined up and get the songs in.

The end result was that a handful of the original games’ most iconic songs did make it in – including Goldfinger‘s “Superman” – but a lot of songs were left out. The original soundtracks included: Bad Religion, Consumed, Dead Kennedys, Goldfinger, Lagwagon, Millencolin, Primus, Rage Against the Machine, Suicidal Tendencies, Swingin’ Utters, The Suicide Machines, The Vandals, and Unsane.

The new ones will feature just 16 songs from Anthrax featuring Chuck D, Goldfinger, Consumed, Lagwagon, Millencolin, Bad Religion, Pegasuses-XL, and Middle Class Rut among others. A total of eight songs from the original soundtracks made the cut. The game itself is due out next month as a DLC for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

  1. “Bring the Noise” Anthrax featuring Chuck D
  2. “Superman” Goldfinger
  3. “When Worlds Collide” Powerman 5000
  4. “Heavy Metal Winner” Consumed
  5. “May 16″ Lagwagon
  6. “No Cigar” Millencolin
  7. “You” Bad Religion
  8. “The Bomb” Pigeon John
  9. “We the People” Lateef the Truthspeaker
  10. “Marathon Mansion!” Pegasuses-XL
  11. “Teenage Blood” Apex Manor
  12. “Please Ask for Help” Telekinesis
  13. “Flyentology (Cassettes Won’t Listen Remix)” El-P featuring Trent Reznor
  14. “USA” Middle Class Rut

Album Review: Hot Water Music – ‘Exister’

The last time we heard from legendary Gainesville, Florida punk band Hot Water Music, it was 2004′s New What Next. Since then, each member has been involved in different musical projects, some solo and some as part of other established groups. No matter their paths, there was always a sense that there was some unfinished business with their original project.

Hot Water Music eventually reformed and has been playing shows for the last year or two, but Exister officially adds 13 songs to their already impressive canon. Production courtesy of Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore in the Blasting Room, gives the band their most produced offering yet. This doesn’t mean that the music has softened, things have just gotten a little glossier and catchier. The elements that you have come to love about the band are all present: driving basslines, dueling vocals, complex drumming, and winding guitars.

Album Review: Garbage – ‘Not Your Kind Of People’

It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven years since Garbage released an album. Seemingly out of nowhere, they have returned to release their fifth studio album Not Your Kind Of People and it sounds to me like they’ve never left. Their self-titled debut was a 90’s alternative classic with singles like “Only Happy When it Rains” and “Stupid Girl.” They evolved rapidly from the first to their following two albums Version 2.0 and Beautiful Garbage by pushing the electronic sound only touched upon in their debut and heightening front-woman Shirley Manson’s vocals to a “happier-sounding” place. By their fourth effort Bleed Like Me they had successfully meshed the best of their trash with the best of their electro-clash and gave both their old and new fans something to chew on.

Album Review: ‘Pennywise – All Or Nothing’

Pennywise - All Or Nothing

When most bands lose their lead singer, they end up calling it quits as no one else can replace their signature sound. In 2009, Jim Lindberg who fronted Pennywisefor over 21 years decided to call it quits to pursue other interests. Enter Zoli Téglás from Ignite. A lot of people have been skeptical of whether of not Zoli would be able to carry on the legacy Jim have left behind. In a word: yes!
